Nepal #1 - Dhaulagiri Circuit days 1-6

We were in Nepal for 4 weeks; in the first 3 weeks of our trip we joined an organised group tour (organised by The Mountain Company) to hike the Dhaulagiri Circuit, a trek around the 8167 m high mountain Dhaulagiri I.

After a morning flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara followed by a 3 hour bus drive, we started hiking from Beni, which is located at an altitude of around 900 m. In the first week we walked through the lower Himalayan range, slowly gaining altitude. Initially we walked through a landscape dominated by terraced fields and mountain villages, higher up the landscape became more rugged and more forested and the villages smaller. The weather was excellent the first week, sunny and warm.

We zijn 4 weken in Nepal geweest; de eerste 3 weken zijn we met een georganiseerde groepsreis meegeweest (georganiseerd door The Mountain Company) en hebben de Dhaulagiri Circuit gelopen, een tocht rond de 8167 m hoge berg Dhaulagiri I.

Na de ochtend vlucht van Kathmandu naar Pokhara gevolgd door een 3 uur lange busrit, zijn we vanaf Beni gaan lopen. Beni ligt ca 900 m. De eerste week wandelden we langzaam omhoog door de lage Himalayas. In het begin liepen we door een landschap met bergdorpen en landbouwterrassen, hogerop werd het landschap ruiger en meer bebost, en de dorpen kleiner. We hadden de eerste week prachtig weer, zonnig en warm.

Whales, lots of whales!

I am still sorting through hundreds of photos from Nepal, and a selection of them will appear on this blog shortly. In the meantime, the sun has disappeared from Tromsø for the year and the whales are back in the local fjords. So since the weather was nice today and the weather forecast pretty bad for the next week, and since the car needed a test drive after a major repair, I took the morning off to go whale watching.

I saw whales, humpback whales, lots of them. It was spectacular. Here a few photos from a morning land-based whale watching.

I ben nog steeds bezig de honderden foto's van Nepal te sorteren, en een selectie hiervan zal binnenkort op deze blog verschijnen. Maar in Tromsø is intussen de zon weer verdwenen voor de rest van het jaar en zijn de walvissen terug in de fjorden. Sinds het vandaag mooi weer was en de weersverwachting voor de komende week nogal slecht is ben ik vanochtend op zoek gegaan naar de walvissen. En ik vond ze, tientallen walvissen, bultruggen; het was prachtig. Hier een paar foto's van vanochtend, walvissen kijken vanaf land.

Nepal

We have just returned to Kathmandu after a beautiful 3 week trip around the mountain Dhaulagiri. We are still in Nepal for another week cycling around the Kathmandu Valley. Blog posts from the trip will come later, but here are 2 photos from the highest point of the trip.

We zijn net terug in Kathmandu na een prachtige 3 weken lange tocht rond de berg Dhaulagiri. We blijven nog een week in Nepal en gaan fietsen in de Kathmandu Valley. Blog posts van de trip komen later, maar hier alvast 2 foto`s van het hoogste punt van de tocht.

Northern lights

Winter is approaching, the nights are getting longer and we have had some good clear weather in the last few weeks. Good conditions for watching northern lights! I have been playing around with my new camera trying to catch some of the lights and below are my 2 favourite photos from the last 2 weeks.

De winter komt eraan, de nachten worden weer langer en we hebben de laatste weken vrij veel helder weer gehad. Goede condities dus om het noorderlicht te bekijken! Ik ben nog steeds een beginner noorderlicht fotograaf en ben nog aan het experimenteren, maar hieronder staan mijn 2 favoriete foto's van de laatste 2 weken. De eerste is vanaf ons terras genomen, de tweede beneden aan het water een paar honderd meter van ons huis.

Wet cycling trip in Kitdalen

We have done some nice trips in the last couple of weeks, but I haven't got around to posting any photos yet. Here a few photos from this weekend, a rather wet cycling trip up the mountains from Kitdalen. We had hoped to explore more of the tracks around the lakes on the plateau, but the weather wasn't very nice, so after an overnight camp on the plateau we just cycled down a different valley to make it a round trip. It is nice mountain biking here, some of the tracks we cycled are used for the popular mountain bike race Lavkarittet. 

We hebben de afgelopen weken verschillende mooie tochten gemaakt, maar ik ben er nog niet aan toegekomen om er foto's van op de blog te plaatsen. Hier een paar foto's van dit weekend, een natte fietstocht in de bergen vanaf Kitdalen. We hoopten meer van de grindwegen rond de meren op het plateau te fietsen, maar het weer was nogal nat en winderig en we zijn de volgende dag maar weer via een ander dal naar beneden gefietst. Er zijn hier mooie paden voor mountain biking en sommige paden langs onze route worden ook voor de populaire mountain bike race Lavkarittet gebruikt.

The Netherlands

A brief trip to The Netherlands with a visit to the international fireworks festival in Scheveningen, a day walking and cycling through the national park 'De Hoge Veluwe', and a round trip along the island Marken and the towns Volendam and Monnickendam with very Dutch scenery, polders with cattle and sheep, windmills, traditional Dutch houses, and sailing boats.

Een korte reis naar Nederland met een bezoek aan het internationale vuurwerkfestival in Scheveningen, een dag wandelen en fietsen in De Hoge Veluwe, en een rondtocht langs Marken, Volendam en Monnickendam met typisch Hollands polderlandschap.

Store Blåmann

The good weather continues.... Beautiful evening trip with Andreia and Kåre up Store Blåmann, one of the most spectacular mountain walks close to Tromsø. Steep, very rocky with stunning views from the top. Store Blåmann featured on my blog before when I sampled its vertical profile for apatite fission track dating in 2009. Here a few more photos.

Het mooie weer zet door.... Hier een prachtige avondwandeling samen met Andreia en Kåre naar de top van Store Blåmann, één van de meest spectaculaire bergwandelingen vlakbij Tromsø. Steil, rotsachtig, met schitterend uitzicht van de top. Store Blåmann is al eerder op mijn blog beschreven toen ik op verschillende hoogtes monsters heb genomen voor apatiet fission track datering in 2009. Hier een paar nieuwe foto's.
