Nepal #4 - Kathmandu and Patan

We had 1 day in Kathmandu after the trek and we joined an excellent guided tour to visit some of the major temple sites around Kathmandu. This tour was still part of the organised Dhaulagiri Circuit trek and arranged by The Mountain Company. We visited the Budhist temple Swayambhunath, the Hindu temple Pashupatinath, and the enormous stupa Bodhnath.

After a week cycling around the Kathmandu Valley (next blog post), we also had a full day in Patan. Patan was originally an independent city south of Kathmandu, but today it is more a suburb of Kathmandu. In Patan we visited the impressive Durbar Square, which has a great collection of temples and palaces, several smaller temples and a number of interesting fair trade handcraft shops, and we enjoyed some good food.

Nepal #3 - Dhaulagiri Circuit days 14-17

The next morning we woke up to blue skies, bright sunshine and stunning views of a completely different landscape, and we finally had an excellent view of Dhaulagiri I. We had the whole day to explore the beautiful Hidden Valley and in the morning we climbed up the ridge on the other side of the river. It is quite amazing to see a meandering river with running water at this altitude, at ca 5000 m. We are now on the northern side of the Dhaulagiri mountain range, in the rain shadow of these tall mountains. On the southern side of the French Pass we had been walking on a glacier for the last 2.5 days, since below 4000 m in altitude.

Climbing up the ridge in a very dry landscape.

The rocks up here contain fossils; we found a few shell prints.

We came across an old grave. Quite a few people have lost their lives trying to climb Dhaulagiri I.

A cold clear night with moonlight shining on Tukuche (left) and Dhaulagiri I (right).

The day after we had excellent weather again. We climbed up to Dhampus Pass at ca 5200 m, followed by a long traverse across a snow field and a steep descent to the next camp at Yak Kharka at ca 3800 m. From there we descended to Marpha in the main valley and continued along the road to Jonsom, from where we would fly out the following morning.

Nepal #2 - Dhaulagiri Circuit days 7-13

In the second week we climbed up from Sallaghari at ca 2980 m to the highest point of the trip, the French Pass at ca 5380 m. We took our time here, with every walking day followed by an acclimatisation day. The weather had changed and we had a bit of rain and, higher up, snow in this part of the trip, but we still had a couple of sunny mornings when we could see and enjoy the spectacular surroundings.

From Sallaghari we had to cross a large recent landslide, and we finally climbed out of the forest just before the Italian basecamp. From the Italian basecamp to the Glacier camp we walked through the impressive Chonbarden gorge, but as we had rain and fog most of this day we didn't see much of the gorge, unfortunately. From Glacier camp we followed the rock covered Chonbarden glacier up to the Dhaulagiri basecamp and towards the French Pass and we had some good views of hanging glaciers, icefalls and lateral moraines and an occasional glimpse of some of the high peaks around us.

Unfortunately we had poor visibility crossing the French Pass so we didn't see the views of the Dhaulagiri I from here, but it made waking up in bright sunshine in the Hidden Valley the day after even more spectacular (next blog post). Several groups after us decided that the weather was too bad and turned back and they therefore missed the beautiful Hidden Valley and the descent to Jonsom. I am glad that our guides dared to trust the weather forecast and move on.
