Ulaanbaatar - Olgii 5-6 July

On our last day in Ulaanbaatar we walked up into the hills south of town. Very nice to get out of all the dust, pollution and noise and excellent views over Ulaanbaatar. Everything in town seems normal again, apart from the curfew when the police blocks all roads into the centre. Our flight to Olgii, in the far west of Mongolia, leaves at 05:50, so we have to leave the guesthouse just before 04:00; a very short night!

Op onze laatste dag in Ulaanbaatar zijn we de heuvels ten zuiden van de stad ingelopen. Heerlijk om even uit het stof, vuile en lawaai van de stad weg te zijn en een prachtig uitzicht over de stad. Alles lijkt weer zijn normale gang te gaan, maar er is nog wel steeds een uitgaansverbod in het centrum, en de politie blokt `s nachts alle wegen in het centrum. Onze vlucht naar Olgii in het westen van Mongolia vertrekt 05:50, dus we moeten al om 04:00 uit ons gasthuis vertrekken, een korte nacht!

On Saturday morning we and our bikes arrived fine and on time in Olgii. We were surprised they managed to fit our bikes in such a little plane. It is very dry here with beautiful rocky hills, but the only vegetation is right next to the river. We need to get permits for entering the national park and as the park is very close to the border we also need a border permit. Unfortunately the national park and border police offices are not open in the weekend, so we will have to wait til Monday before we set off. We are staying in a nice little gercamp just outside town and spending the weekend getting all our supplies together from the little shops and market in town.

We zijn zaterdagochtend met onze fietsen goed in Olgii aangekomen. De fietsen pasten in het kleine vliegtuigje. Het is hier erg droog met rotsige bergen, alleen vlak langs de rivier is er vegetatie te vinden. We hebben vergunningen nodig voor Tavan Bogd Nationaal Park en aangezien het park tegen de grens met China ligt hebben we ook een grensvergunning nodig. Helaas zijn alle kantoren het hele weekend gesloten, dus we kunnen pas maandag vertrekken. We verblijven in een kleine ger camp net buiten het dorp en gebruiken het weekend om eten voor de komende week in de kleine winkeltjes en de markt bij elkaar te krijgen.
