Oslo

I used to be able to renew my passport at the Dutch consulate in Tromsø, but they have changed the requirements and now I have to apply in person at the Dutch embassy in Oslo. So 1600 NOK in travel cost, 5 hours in a plane (this included an hour sitting in the plane at the Tromsø airport while a snowstorm stopped all traffic) and a day wasted for a 20 min meeting at the Dutch embassy to hand in the forms and get some fingerprints taken for a new passport. I guess this is called progress ...

I had a few extra hours in Oslo, which I spent walking around town and browsing some of the better bookshops. Below some impressions from Oslo in winter.

We snowshoed/skied up Lille Blåmann in beautiful autumn weather and decent snow last Sunday. It was probably the last time we saw the sun this year: the polar night starts in about a week, and the weather forecast is not exactly promising, with +3°C and rain expected for the next 10 days.

Tony en Pascal following the main track up.

The low sun gives long shadows. The mast and building on the top lie at ca 600 m and our track will go right past them.

The last few hundred meters to the top are quite flat.

And heading down again.

Winter has arrived...

A decent autumn storm last week dumped a lot of snow in northern Norway. According to reports in the newspaper this sudden dump of snow is causing havoc on the roads with many (mostly foreign) trucks being ill-prepared for the wintery conditions and not being able to get up the hills. We got woken up early one morning (5:30 am) when a big truck stood spinning right behind our house and outside our bedroom window for at least 30 minutes trying to get up the not very steep road. It finally managed to leave 4 hours later after they got hold of some chains, which probably meant that they did not actually have any chains themselves, although this is compulsory for trucks. It has made me rather wary of trucks on the road....

But this sudden dump of snow has also given us a beautiful winter landscape with nice powder snow higher up. And there is enough snow even on the island Tromsøya that they have prepared the løypes, which is unusual for October. So our snow shoes and skis have come out of the storage: we went for a snow shoe trip through a forest on the weekend, and I have done some short ski trips in the løypes and up Rødtinden in the last few days.

The snow was followed by some cold days, -10 C last night, making the snow crystals on the surface grow into big flakes. Here a few photos from along my way to and from the university.

The sun won't set for another few weeks yet, but it is already very low at the horizon giving beautiful diffuse light

And some photos from a quick trip up Rødtinden today, my first proper ski trip of the season. Rødtinden is a little hill just outside Tromsø and a very popular destination, perfect if you just want to be out for 1-2 hours.

Rødtinden, my destination for today, is the little peak in the middle. It looks further than it is because of the angle of the photo.

Sunset at 14:30; the days are getting very short.
