Snowshoeing in the Dolomites: Fanes-Sennes-Braies natural park

We had a few days snowshoeing in the Dolomites in northern Italy, based from a mountain hut, de beautiful Sennes hut. It snowed for a couple of days before we got there so we had a nice thick layer of powder snow. This made snowshoeing hard work, but it left beautiful prints as you can see in some of the photos below. We were very lucky with the weather and got a good dose of sunshine and had some beautiful snowshoe treks in the mountains. We borrowed sleds to get back down the mountain, which was fast, fun and sometimes a little scary.

Only a couple of days.....

... until the sun comes back. The sun should be back in town on Monday 21 January. And, as always, in the last week before the sun comes back we have the excellent Tromsø International Film Festival. Also this year we are seeing many interesting movies; some better than others, but that's why you go to a film festival. Below a few photos of the last weeks, the first 2 from a ski trip through the forest on a day with 'flat light'. The last 4 taken a few days ago after the last snow fall.

Happy New Year! Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

We were in Tromsø for the New Year. Normally there are excellent 'mountain' fireworks from the top of the cable car at Fløya and we have often walked up to Fløya on New Year's Eve to watch the fireworks from there, looking out over all of Tromsø. Unfortunately the cable car is currently out of order and they found an alternative location for the main fireworks along the fjord. So this year we watched it from the ski jump on top of Tromsøya, not too far from where we live, from where we had a good view of the main fireworks and of the changing year numbers on the mountain behind it.

Still 2012....

Now it is 2013!

Fireworks everywhere you look.

Also right up from where we were standing.
