Trans Siberian 4: Kharkhorin-Khogno Khan

We had booked a 3-day trip to Kharkhorin instead of the standard trip to Terelj. It was interesting to see the road again: the ca 120 km between Ulaanbaatar and Lun, which was completely broken up in 2008, was now fully asphalted, but already full of big and deep holes, so cars have to drive slalom around them. The last 200 or so kilometers before Kharkhorin, which was a beautiful road in 2008, was now so bad that many cars were driving next to it. In Kharkhorin we stayed in the Anan ger camp at a beautiful location along the Orkhon river, close to the hills.

The following day we visited the very interesting Kharkhorin museum, built in 2011 so new for me too, which displays many of the artifacts that were dug up from the old city of Kharkhorin by archeologists in the last decade. And of course the Erdene Zuu monastery. In the afternoon we drove to another ger camp, Khogno Khan, again in a beautiful location. This time near the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes and some fantastic granite mountains.

The following morning we visited the small but very scenic Erden Khamba monastery in the mountains before heading back to Ulaanbaatar. Along the road back we also stopped at a ger selling fresh airag (fermented mare's milk) and butter to have a look at the horses and taste the airag.
