From Sallaghari we had to cross a large recent landslide, and we finally climbed out of the forest just before the Italian basecamp. From the Italian basecamp to the Glacier camp we walked through the impressive Chonbarden gorge, but as we had rain and fog most of this day we didn't see much of the gorge, unfortunately. From Glacier camp we followed the rock covered Chonbarden glacier up to the Dhaulagiri basecamp and towards the French Pass and we had some good views of hanging glaciers, icefalls and lateral moraines and an occasional glimpse of some of the high peaks around us.
Unfortunately we had poor visibility crossing the French Pass so we didn't see the views of the Dhaulagiri I from here, but it made waking up in bright sunshine in the Hidden Valley the day after even more spectacular (next blog post). Several groups after us decided that the weather was too bad and turned back and they therefore missed the beautiful Hidden Valley and the descent to Jonsom. I am glad that our guides dared to trust the weather forecast and move on.
In de tweede week zijn we van Sallaghari op ca 2980 m naar het hoogste punt van de tocht gelopen, de Franse pas op ca 5380 m. We hebben dit rustig gedaan, met een acclimatisatiedag na elke wandeldag. Het weer is deze week slechter met regen en sneeuw, maar we hebben nog steeds verschillende mooie zonnige ochtenden gehad om van de spectaculaire omgeving te genieten.
Vanaf Sallaghari moesten we eerst een grote en recentelijke landverschuiving over, en net voor het Italiaanse basecamp kwamen we eindelijk boven de boomgrens uit. Vanaf het Italiaanse basecamp naar het gletscher camp liepen we door de indrukwekkende Chonbarden kloof, maar het was hier helaas nat en mistig en we zagen er niet veel van. Vanaf het gletscher camp volgden we de met stenen bedekte Chonbarden gletscher naar het Dhaulagiri basecamp en verder richting de Franse pas. Mooi uitzicht op hangende gletschers en zijmorenes en af en toe een glimp van de hoge bergen rond ons.
Helaas was het weer niet zo goed toen we de Franse pas overstaken op weg naar de verborgen vallei en we hebben die dag weinig van het landschap gezien, maar dat maakte het uitzicht de volgende dag toen we met stralende zon wakker werden alleen maar spectaculairder (volgende blog post). Verschillende groepen die achter ons kwamen vonden het weer te slecht en zijn vanaf het Dhaulagiri basecamp teruggekeerd. Zij hebben daardoor het hoogtepunt van de tocht, de prachtige verborgen vallei, en de afdaling naar Jonsom gemist. Ik ben blij dat onze gidsen de weersvoorspelling vertrouwden en met ons doorgegaan zijn.
