Nepal #3 - Dhaulagiri Circuit days 14-17

The next morning we woke up to blue skies, bright sunshine and stunning views of a completely different landscape, and we finally had an excellent view of Dhaulagiri I. We had the whole day to explore the beautiful Hidden Valley and in the morning we climbed up the ridge on the other side of the river. It is quite amazing to see a meandering river with running water at this altitude, at ca 5000 m. We are now on the northern side of the Dhaulagiri mountain range, in the rain shadow of these tall mountains. On the southern side of the French Pass we had been walking on a glacier for the last 2.5 days, since below 4000 m in altitude.

De volgende morgen werden we wakker met blauwe lucht en zon en konden we eindelijk de prachtige Verborgen Vallei zien, een heel ander landschap dan aan de zuidkant van de Franse pas. We hadden ook eindelijk een prachtig uitzicht op de Dhaulagiri I. We hadden de hele dag om de verborgen vallei te ontdekken en zijn 's ochtends de bergrug aan de andere kant van de rivier omhooggelopen. Het was heel apart om op 5000 m hoogte een meanderende rivier met stromend water te zien. We zijn nu aan de noordkant van de Dhaulagiri bergketen en in de regenschaduw van deze hoge bergen. Aan de zuidkant hebben we de laatste 2,5 dagen, vanaf een hoogte van 4000 m, over gletschers gelopen.

The day after we had excellent weather again. We climbed up to Dhampus Pass at ca 5200 m, followed by a long traverse across a snow field and a steep descent to the next camp at Yak Kharka at ca 3800 m. From there we descended to Marpha in the main valley and continued along the road to Jonsom, from where we would fly out the following morning.

De volgende dag hadden we weer prachtig weer. Vanaf het kamp zijn we eerst omhoog gelopen naar Dhampus pas op ca 5200 m, gevolgd door een lange traverse over een sneeuw bedekte helling, en een steile afdaling naar ons volgende kamp bij Yak Kharka op ca 3800 m. Hier vandaan zijn we verder afgedaald naar Marpha in de volgende vallei, en vervolgens langs de weg naar Jonsom, vanwaar we de volgende dag met een klein vliegtuigje terug zouden vliegen naar Pokhara en Kathmandu.
