Nepal #5 - Kathmandu Valley

Our last week in Nepal we spent cycling around the Kathmandu Valley and visiting some of the many interesting cultural or natural sites. We had rented mountain bikes in Kathmandu and navigating around the valley turned out to be quite easy with a combination of a map and OpenStreetMap on the GPS. We battled our way through Kathmandu traffic to get to Budhanilkantha, via Tokha, at the start of the hills and near Shivapuri national park north of Kathmandu. Based in the beautiful Shivapuri Heights cottages we went for a day walk to the Nagi Gompa monastery in Shivapuri national park and visited the Budhanilkantha temple with the reclining Vishnu and a local Lhundrup Choling monastery. The owners of the cottages also took me to a local orphanage and school that they are supporting.

In de laatste week in Nepal zijn we gaan fietsen in de Kathmandu vallei en hebben we verschillende interessante culturele bezienswaardigheden en natuurgebieden bezocht. We hebben mountainbikes gehuurd in Kathmandu en met behulp van een redelijk goede kaart en OpenStreetMap op onze GPS was het geen probleem om de juiste paden en wegen  te vinden. Van Kathmandu zijn we via Tokha naar Budhanilkantha aan de voet van de heuvels rond de Kathmandu vallei gefietst. Vanuit onze prachtige accommodatie, de Shivapuri Heights cottages, hebben we een dagwandeling gemaakt naar het Nagi Gompa klooster in het Shivapuri nationale park en hebben we de Budhanilkantha tempel met de liggende Vishnu en het Lhundrup Choling klooster bezocht. Ik ben ook met de eigenaars van de cottages meegeweest naar een weeshuis en een school die zij steunen.

From Budhanilkantha we cycled along nice trails through Shivapuri national park to Sundarijal and from there via Sankhu to Nagarkot, where we stayed at the peaceful and beautifully situated Nagarkot Farmhouse. Most of the trails and roads were good for cycling, but there were a few stretches of very rough stone-paved roads. Nagarkot is known for its great Himalaya views, but unfortunately it was quite misty when we were there and we only saw a brief glimpse of the high mountains.

Van Budhanilkantha zijn we langs een mooi bospad door het Shivapuri nationale park naar Sundarijal gefietst en vandaar via Sankhu door naar Nagarkot, waar we in het rustig gelegen, en met prachtig uitzicht, Nagarkot Farmhouse hebben overnacht. De meeste paden en wegen waren prima te fietsen. Nagarkot ligt op een heuvelrug met geweldig uitzicht naar de besneeuwde hoge toppen van de Himalayas, maar het was helaas nogal heiig toen wij er waren en we hebben de bergen alleen maar even net na zonsopgang gezien.

From Nagarkot we had a fast ride down the hill along the main road to Telkot from where we took the forest trail along the ridge top to the Changu Narayan temple. After visiting the temple we continued down the hill through fields to the old town Bhaktapur. We dropped off our bikes and bags in our hotel, the friendly hotel Planet, just outside the city, and then spent a few hours wandering around the old city centre of Bhaktapur with its many temples and Newari architecture. The next morning we cycled via minor roads and village trails back to our beautiful traditional style Hira guesthouse overlooking the Golden temple in Patan, from where we cycled and walked through terrible traffic to Kathmandu to bring the bikes back and collect our stored luggage from the previous hotel.

Van Nagarkot zijn we langs de hoofdweg omlaag gefietst naar Telkot, vanwaar we een bospad hebben genomen naar de tempel van Changu Narayan. Na de tempel bezocht te hebben zijn we door de velden verder omlaag gefietst naar de oude stad Bhaktapur. We hebben daar onze fietsen en tassen in het vriendelijke hotel Planet achtergelaten en hadden nog een paar uur met daglicht om door het oude stadscentrum van Bhaktapur met z'n vele tempels en Newari architectuur te wandelen. De volgende ochtend zijn we via rustige wegen en dorpspaadjes naar ons hotel, het prachtige traditionele Hira guesthouse met uitzicht over de gouden tempel, in Patan gefietst. Na onze bagage hier achtergelaten te hebben zijn we deels fietsend en deels lopend door het chaotische verkeer naar Kathmandu gegaan om de fietsen terug te brengen en onze bagage, die we in ons vorige hotel hadden achtergelaten, op te halen.
